Lithuania's businesses siding with Google against Street View ban

A decision by the State Data Protection Inspectorate to not allow photographing streetscapes in many Lithuanian cities and towns as part of Google’s Street View project is unfavorable for the country and its business, Lithuania’s businessmen believe.

They claim that this could undermine foreign tourists’ confidence in Lithuania and the country would lose a good chance to promote itself free of charge, the Verslo Žinios business daily reports.

“If there are no views from Lithuania in Google Maps Street View, this will undermine confidence in Lithuania. Before traveling to less-known countries people try to find as much as possible about them online and Street View is one of the tools to do that,” Kęstutis Ambrazaitis, CEO of incoming tourism agency Lithuanian Tours, told the daily.

Evalda Šiškauskienė, president of the Lithuanian Hotels and Restaurants Association, pointed out that such projects as Street View were an excellent possibility to raise awareness about the country free of charge hence it would be a sin to waive this chance.

However, the benefits of Google Maps Street View for Lithuania would depend on which street views were to be shown to internet users across the world, she added.
