“We have been importing the largest share of electricity in the European Union (EU) for the third consecutive year. Even the imports of 10-15 percent are considered a factor of economic risk. Considering the alternatives, reliable and competitive basic electricity generation can be ensured by a new nuclear power plant in Visaginas,” Litgrid CEO, Virgilijus Poderys, said in a press release.

Last year, the country’s total electricity demand made up 10.4 billion kWh. Spending on electricity imports and the imports of gas used for electricity generation exceeded 2 billion litas (EUR 579.7 mln).

Electricity imports made up 6.74 billion kWh and cost more than 1 billion litas. Local output totaled some 3 billion kWh. Spending on the imports of gas used for electricity generation totaled some 1 billion litas.
