Lithuania's Elektrėnai power plant worked at increased capacity to compensate shutdown at Finland's Olkiluoto

Lietuvos Elektrinė (Power Plant of Lithuania) in Elektrėnai operated at increased capacity at the end of last week amid electricity shortages due to an unscheduled shutdown of Finland's Olkiluoto-2 nuclear reactor.

The Elektrėnai power plant's Unit 7 was switched on on Thursday and Friday in addition to the new unit, number 9, a spokeswoman for Lietuvos Energijos Gamyba (Lithuanian Energy Production), a subsidiary of the electricity group Lietuvos Energija (Lithuanian Energy), told BNS, adding that the plant's capacity had been increased at the request of the electricity transmission grid operator Litgrid.

"Unit 9 will definitely remain in operation until the end of September," Ernesta Dapkienė told BNS.

The plant on Thursday supplied, on average, 585 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the grid, with Unit 7 providing 190 MW and Unit 9 providing 395 MW, and 503 MW on Friday, at 139 MW and 364 MW, respectively. On Monday, Unit 9, the only operating unit, is supplying 349 MW of power, she says.

The new 455-MW unit, which was completed in autumn 2012, has been in operation since August 10. Warranty-covered defects were being eliminated in May through July.

Electricity supply in Finland declined after generation at the country's Olkiluoto-2 reactor stopped unexpectedly on September 9.
