Lithuania’s National Audit frowns on premiums at Western Union

Western Union, hailed by Lithuania’s authorities as one of the most desirable investors, may have to return 0.9 million litas (EUR 0.26m) out of 4.3 million litas it received in the form of the European Union’s (EU) support due to the subtleties of Lithuania’s labor regulations, the Verslo Žinios business daily reports.

Sources of the daily said that the National Audit Office, which is auditing the use of EU funds now, had established that the payment of premiums to wages at the international company Western Union had not been formalized in full compliance with Lithuania’s legislation.

It is not yet clear whether Western Union will be allowed to remedy the violations. The audit should be closed on 31 December, Sigita Rojutė, deputy director of the 8th Audit Department of the National Audit Office, told the daily. Western Union would not comment on possible violations while the audit is still ongoing.

According to the data published on the website esparama.lt, Western Union has received support for two projects. The value of the projects implemented by the company will exceed 51 million litas in total.
