Lithuania’s nuclear regulatory agency getting ready for licensing new nuclear facility

The experts of the Lithuanian State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) will get ready for safety supervision and assessment of an Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR), which Japan’s Hitachi, a strategic investor in a new nuclear power plant, has proposed to build at the new facility in Visaginas.

The agency’s experts intended to review the reactor’s cooling, supervision and management, protective cover, radioactive waste management and other systems, VATESI said in a press release. Hitachi would hold a presentation of the reactor’s features at a seminar on 14-18 May.

The ABWR reactor is said to be the only generation III nuclear reactor with a proven operational track record around the world, with an enhanced level of safety.

The ABWR is designed for a lifetime of at least 60 years (as compared with at least 40 years for the Generation II reactors). Boiling water reactors are now employed at one third of power plants across the world.

Lithuania hopes to build the new nuclear power plant in 2020-2022 in cooperation with Japan’s Hitachi as a strategic investor as well as with the energy companies from three Baltic countries. The new nuclear facility project costs are estimated to range between 4.6 billion euros and 5.2 billion euros.
