Lithuania’s retailers say they could save millions if EU were to cap bank card fees

Lithuania’s retailers hail the European Commission’s (EC) proposal to cap banking fees added to credit and debit card purchases, the Verslo Žinios business daily reports.

However, some businessmen doubt whether this regulation would actually function in Lithuania. They are also concerned that there might be gaps that would let banks maintain the rates.

“We used to lose millions of litas each year by paying 1 percent from turnover. This particularly concerns the campaigns when some goods are sold at their cost price. We will be able to save once the fees are reduced,” Robertas Miliauskas, chairman of Lietkoopsąjunga, told the daily.

He guessed that the Commission was able to bring the fees into line. He reminded of similar regulation of mobile services. Despite resistance, which was rather strong, the Commission brought the rates down.
