Mauritania was not the only country where the group looked for possibilities to first open the processing facilities and later establish companies, Vičiūnai chairman Visvaldas Matijošaitis told the daily.

“Fishers from almost all over the world fish in Mauritania and process the catch there. The variety of fish species is great there, the Chinese, the Japanese are eager to invest there. We are among the first Lithuanians trying to enter that market,” Matijošaitis said.

Vičiūnai group would team up with Mauritanian partners for this project. The partners let the Lithuanian group use an existing fish processing facility where Vičiūnai would install equipment delivered from Lithuania.

Investment in the facility would only make up some 2 million litas (EUR 0.58 m). However, the Lithuanian group plans to build a new facility in the future. Vičiūnai expects to process some 3,000 tons of fish and seafood next year; later, the output should increase.
