Lithuanian banks see their assets shrink

Commercial banks and foreign bank branches operating in Lithuania held 76.726 billion litas (EUR 22.2 b) in total assets as of late February, down 254 million litas, or 0.3 percent, compared with the month-earlier figure of 76.98 billion litas.

Compared with a year ago, the assets contracted by 4.5 percent. In February 2011 banking assets, which included the assets of Snoras, the commercial bank now in bankruptcy, totaled 80.328 billion litas.

SEB Bankas remained the largest bank with assets worth 24.852 billion litas at the end of February, up 0.1 percent from January and up 20.9 percent from February 2011, data from the Lithuanian Banks’ Association showed on Friday.

Aggregate loan portfolio totaled 53.307 billion litas at the end of February, down 0.3 percent from January and down 8.4 percent from February 2011.

Bank deposits totaled 42.866 billion litas, up 1.6 percent from January but down 4.2 percent from February 2011.
