A Lithuanian efficient energy solutions company, together with foreign partners, is developing software that will help reduce power consumption in mobile communications base stations by around 12 percent, the business daily Verslo Žinios reported on Tuesday.

Some 900,000 euros will be invested in the product, which is planned to be offered to European mobile operators in 2013 and then launched in North America.

Three companies - Poland's Datax, Lithuania's Baltic Engineering Company (Benco) and Germany's Atesio - are developing the solution under the research and development project GreenNets.

"The new tool will optimize operators' energy costs. It will allow operators to efficiently manage their networks by turning them on or off, depending on the number of users, rather than buying additional cooling equipment. By conservative estimates, our tool should help cut energy consumption in operators' networks by 5-12 percent," Benco Chairman Darius Montvila said.

The project's external advisory board includes future-to-be users of the product, such as Vodafone, Telenor, Bite and Omnitel.
