Lithuanian Energy considers burning biofuel at Elektrėnai plant

Lithuania's state-owned electricity production group Lietuvos Energija (Lithuanian Energy), which is completing the construction of a new natural gas combined cycle unit worth over a billion litas (EUR 300 m) at the Lithuanian Power Plant (LPP) in Elektrėnai, considers burning biofuel to produce energy at the plant.

A feasibility study carried out by Ramboll Danmark, in which the Danish consultancy proposes to modernize the Elektrėnai plant's heating production technologies by installing new biofuel boilers, has been presented to Lietuvos Energija's management, the company said in a press release on Monday.

"Having assessed heat energy production alternatives at the LPP and possibilities for expanding the use of biofuel to produce heat energy in the region of Elektrėnai, it has been proposed to install new heat production capabilities comprised of biofuel-fired water and gas-fired steam boilers," Lietuvos Energija CEO Dalius Misiūnas said in the press release.

It is planned that new heat energy production installations, which would produce heating for private households and businesses in the Elektrėnai region, will be built and put into operation in late 2013.

In late March, Lietuvos Energija announced a tender for a loan of 131 million litas. Slightly more than half of the money will be used to finance the biofuel project in Elektrėnai and the rest will go towards other investment projects, including the completion of the combined cycle unit.

State-owned Visagino Atominė Elektrinė (Visaginas Nuclear Power Plant, or VAE) holds a 96.13 percent stake in Lietuvos Energija, which is listed on the blue-chip Main List of the NASDAQ OMX Vilnius stock exchange.
