Meanwhile, farmers assure that the harvest would not be lost if that happened, the news portal vz.lt reports.
Lietuvos Geležinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways), Lithuania’s railway operator, confirmed that the companies had filed applications to rent 1,409 railcars for the harvest time whereas the company could only provide 465.
“Our company alone needs at least 200 railcars since we export between 30 and 40 percent of Lithuania’s grain. I do not know how we could work without this means of transport. We are just suspending the purchase of grain for the meantime,” Karolis Šimas, CEO of Agrokoncernas, told the news portal.
“We will study all applications from the companies and will distribute the railcars available among grain traders pro rata the number of applications. We intend to sign contracts with the companies in the course of this week. We will start providing the grain railcars immediately after the signing of contracts,” Tomas Keršis, director of the commerce department of the Freight Transportation Directorate of Lietuvos Geležinkeliai, told the news portal.
