In a vote of 73 to 4 with 25 abstentions, the Seimas backed Conservative MP Jurgis Razma's proposal not to approve any new VAT breaks except those proposed by President Dalia Grybauskaitė.
The proposals called for introducing reduced VAT rates on all types of art, culture, and sport evens; museum, entertainment park, and zoo tickets; accommodation services, all food products, children's car seats, and bicycle helmets.
The Seimas started debating proposals on VAT rate reductions after Grybauskaitė proposed to cut VAT on the press.
The parliament will make final decisions on reduced VAT rates for the press and public transport services after the government gives its opinion on the latter proposal.
Currently, reduced VAT rates apply to district heating and hot water, and state-subsidized medications.
