Lithuanian population skeptical about joining eurozone

The government will face quite a challenge in meeting its goal of introducing the euro in Lithuania in 2015, as a lot of people in the country either do not want the single currency or want euro adoption to be posponed, the weekly magazine Veidas reports.

According to the latest poll carried out by Prime Consulting for the magazine, merely 7.2 percent of respondents from Lithuania's five major cities believe that the euro should replace the litas as soon as possible. Another 11.6 percent are in favor of adopting the single currency, but think that the country should not rush into the eurozone.

More than one-fifth of respondents believe that Lithuania should not join the single currency at all and 37 percent think that euro adoption should be pushed back for as long as possible.

When asked when it would be the best time for Lithuania to join the eurozone, only 10.8 percent of those polled said that it could be 2014-2016. All other respondents preferred a much later date, with as many as two-fifths saying that the country should adopt the euro after 2020.

Prime Consulting polled 500 residents of the country's five biggest cities on March 25 to 27.
