The project is being carried out by a consortium that is led by Kauno Tiltai (Kaunas Bridges), the biggest road and bridge construction group in the Baltics, and also includes the Polish-based railway construction company Trakcja-Tiltra, Panevėžio Keliai (Panevėžys Roads), the MG Baltic-owned building company Mitnija and Latvia's Belam-Riga.
The new railway bypass is to be completed by June 2014, Kauno Tiltai said.
A key goal of the project is to divert train traffic from the center of Vilnius onto the bypass tracks. Freight trains will be able to travel at speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour on the 24-kilometer bypass after the project is completed.
The European Union will provide 85 percent of funding for the project and the state railway operator will contribute the remaining 15 percent.
