Lithuanian ruling coalition agrees on need to raise basic salary

Representatives of Lithuania's ruling coalition in the Seimas agree on the need to raise the basic monthly salary which is used to calculate salaries for politicians, judges, civil servants, according to Jurgis Razma, elder of the Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats political group in the Seimas.

The Social Security and Labor Ministry has no plans to raise the basic salary, standing at LTL 450 (EUR 130), in 2013.

"We have talked in the ruling coalition that we should look for opportunities to save elsewhere, but the basic salary should be raised by LTL 10-20," Razma told BNS on Wednesday, adding that the Liberal Movement and the Liberal and Center Union back the idea.

Razma said there were no detailed calculations as to how much additional funds would be needed to raise the basic salary by LTL 10-20, but, he said, the sum might stand at several hundred million.

"In that case we would have to find ways to generate additional revenues or ways to save the amount elsewhere," Razma said.

Lithuania's government looked into a proposal by the Ministry of Social Security and Labor in late June to keep the basic salary at LTL 450 in 2013. But the final decision was not made. Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius said the issue was still under consideration.

The amount of the basic monthly salary, which is used to calculate wages for civil servants, was cut to LTL 450 from LTL 490 in 2009 as the government was cutting public expenditure amid financial woes.
