Lithuanians like online banking but not online shopping

Lithuanian Internet users are more likely to do online banking and read news on the Internet than the EU average, but are less likely to shop online, the latest Eurobarometer survey has shown.

The percentage of Lithuanian Internet users using online social networks is similar to the EU average, at 51 percent and 52 percent, respectively, but the percentage of those reading news online is well above the EU average, at 89 percent and 64 percent. Eighty percent of Lithuanians use email, slightly below the EU average of 85 percent.

The highest percentage of respondents saying that they use social networking sites is in Latvia, at 69 percent. The Estonian figure is lower, at 56 percent.

Respondents in Lithuania are the most likely to use the internet for online news, at 89 percent, followed closely by Estonians, 87 percent, and Latvians, 85 percent. The lowest figure is in France, at 45 percent.

Sixty-five percent of Lithuanian Internet users do online banking, above the EU average of 48 percent, and 38 percent buy goods or services over the Internet, below the EU average of 53 percent.

Thirty-five percent of respondents in Lithuania said that they had never accessed the Internet, compared with the EU average of 29 percent.

Some 27,000 people were interview across the EU, including 1,016 in Lithuania. The survey was carried out on 10 to 25 March.
