Revenues for the second quarter came in at 124 million litas, down by 9 percent year-on-year but up by 2 percent quarter-on-quarter, the company, which is 100 percent owned by the Nordic telecoms group TeliaSonera, said in a press release.

"Omnitel achieved its goals in the first half and stabilized revenues from business users and private regular payment users," Antanas Zabulis, the company's president, said.

Omnitel said in the press release that it maintained a stable 29 percent EBITDA margin in the first half. The margin was 27.9 percent in the first half of 2011 and 28.1 percent in the second quarter of that year.

The company has upgraded its mobile networks in Vilnius and Kaunas, increasing its 3G coverage in these cities by another 15 percent, as part of its full network modernization launched this year. The new equipment is also 4G compatible. The operator plans to upgrade 50 percent of its network by the end of the year, with the rest to be upgraded within two years, according to the press release.

Omnitel had 1.95 million users in late June, slightly down from 1.99 million at the end of 2011.

The mobile phone operator posted a net profit of 29.1 million litas for the full year 2011, down from 70.5 million litas in 2010. Its sales revenues fell by 7.6 percent to 548.2 million litas.

The company said in its 2011 annual report that in 2012 it planned to further strengthen it mobile data business, offer a wide range of phones and equipment, and expand its 4G network.
