More than half Lithuanians sign financial product agreements without reading

Only 43 percent of people in Lithuania always read a financial product agreement before signing it, according to a financial behavior and literacy survey carried out for the Bank of Lithuania.

Twelve percent of those surveyed never or rarely read such agreements, and 16 percent do so occasionally, the central bank said in a press release on Monday.

"Consumers risk having serious inconveniences by failing to take enough interest in their contractual obligations and rights. Therefore, we urge (consumers) to read agreements on financial products or services very carefully and to consider several options before making their decisions. Rushing in such an important area as personal finances is unjustifiable," said Darius Andriukaitis, the head of the Consumer Protection and Education Division at the Bank of Lithuania's Supervision Service.

According to the survey, people aged 18 to 19 years are the least likely to read agreements, with just one in five respondents in this age group saying they always read agreements on financial services. People aged 40 to 49 years and more educated respondents were more likely to always read an agreement before signing it.

Spinter Tyrimai surveyed 1,207 people aged 18 to 79 years on 20 July to 10 August.
