Poland anxious if Lithuania will continue joint energy projects

Poland wants to know if Lithuania will continue joint energy projects with the neighboring country after the government change, says Deputy Energy Minister Žygimantas Vaičiūnas.

"Polish officials are interested in how much continuity they can expect in these projects. We assured them during the meetings that the interconnection projects would be continued," Vaičiūnas, who spoke with Polish Treasury Minister Mikolaj Budzanowski in Warsaw on Monday, told BNS.

The vice-minister took part in a meeting of the Energy Charter Conference in the Polish capital.

The Polish online news site Cire.pl has reported that, among other things, Budzanowski and Vaičiūnas spoke about the planned liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Klaipėda, and gas and electricity interconnections between the countries.

"We spoke about the LitPol Link project and a gas pipeline that will link the countries. The LitPol Link project is being implemented according to schedule. On the Lithuanian side, all permits for this power link will be obtained by the end of this year, and on the Polish side, sometime later," Vaičiūnas told BNS.

According to the Polish Treasury Ministry, the conversation with Vaičiūnas focused on a gas pipeline link between Poland and Lithuania that would allow transporting about 2.3 billion cubic meters of gas annually.

Lithuania, which is fully dependent on Russia's Gazprom for its gas supplies, expects to build a gas link with Poland. Also, it explores possibilities for extracting shale gas.

Poland, which now generates around 90 percent of its electricity from coal, is looking for alternatives to be able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the future.
