Prime Minister says Japan supports Visaginas nuclear plant project

Japan supports the Visaginas Nuclear Power Plant project, which includes Japan's Hitachi company as the strategic investor, Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius' press service said on Monday. Kubilius is currently on a visit to Japan.

According to the press release, Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda told Kubilius he "applauded the progress made in the Visaginas nuclear plant project, noting its big significance for the region's energy security and emphasizing the importance of high nuclear safety standards."

"In the words of both prime ministers, Hitachi, planning to invest in Lithuania, paves way for other Japanese companies and companies of the rest of the EU to invest in Lithuania," reads the press release.

cooperating with Latvia, Estonia, and Poland and Hitachi as strategic investor, Lithuania plans to build the new nuclear power plant by 2020.
