"The British retail giant's representatives put special focus on design and innovation. They also looked at product safety, environmental impact, and delivery time frames," it quoted Ingrida Šukienė, a public relations coordinator at Enterprise Lithuania, the government's export promotion agency, as saying.
Manufactures of toys, electrical, sports and garden goods presented themselves at a meeting arranged by Enterprise Lithuania. Tesco's representatives were also interested in furniture, home decoration products, and kitchen and tableware.
Tesco selected several products made by Naujoji Ringuva, but the soap manufacturer would not disclose what products these were.
Žilvinas Šarakauskas, the export director at the waterproof footwear manufacturer Paliutis, said, "The fact that Tesco starts seeking contacts directly is a good sign for us, because previously large foreign retail chains would not even speak to producers from the so-called Eastern European bloc. They would transfer the risk to intermediaries."
