"Lithuanian transport companies have much more capabilities. We want more cargo to be transported via Lithuania, not only to Afghanistan, but also from it. This niche has not been properly exploited yet. We also have to look for possibilities to ship some cargo through Palanga airport as well," he said in a press release.
In April, Riga airport began handling NATO's regular transit cargo shipments for the US military in Afghanistan.
The seaport of Klaipėda handled 3,456 TEU containers bound for Afghanistan during the first five months of this year, three times as many as in the same period last year.
Afghanistan-bound cargoes started to be shipped via Lithuania in December 2010, and the first shipment from the Asian country arrived in Lithuania this spring.
