Unexpected rise in consumer prices triggered by surging fuel

Unexpected rise in consumer prices in Lithuania in March was triggered by surging prices of petroleum products, SEB Bankas’ chief analyst comments.

All factors have contributed to the surge of prices last month, Vilija Tauraitė says.

“The rise in fuel price was impressive in March. And, similar to previous months, there were not many reasons for the price to go down, basically everything led us to the upside, and first of all, of course, it’s fuel. Then it’s food products, which are getting more expensive as spring approaches. Inflation was also driven by seasonal effects of new fashion collections, including clothing and footwear,” Tauraitė told BNS in comments about the latest inflation figures.

She added that it was difficult to forecast now whether monthly inflation would continue at a similar rate in April.

Lithuania’s monthly inflation rate in March reached 1 percent, marking the third successive month of rising consumer prices, Statistics Lithuania said earlier on Tuesday. SEB Bankas had forecast the monthly rate of 0.7 percent. Statistics Lithuania had forecast that the EU-harmonized monthly inflation rate in March would be 0.4 percent.
