Despite that, people who live in St. Petersburg like to celebrate the New Year in Lithuania, the Vakarų Ekspresas daily reports.
“This problem needs a complex approach, efforts by several institutions in Lithuania. Absence of a direct air link between Vilnius and St. Petersburg, which is home to 5 million people, is a problem,” she said.
“Transport communication is problematic. Russia’s Ak Bars offered flights during several months but the route was closed. There is a daily train service both to and from Lithuania but tourists complain that tickets are expensive. I think big efforts should be made so as to have the flights resumed. Many tourists would prefer traveling by air,” Algimantas Belzus, Lithuania’s commercial attaché in St. Petersburg, told the daily.
Many efforts were made to restore the air link between St. Petersburg and Lithuania, the attaché said.
“Lithuania is getting more popular in these regions. People from in St. Petersburg are travelling there for treatment and rest more and more often,” he said.
