Lithuania expects new quality in EU-Belarusian relations

Lithuania expects that its presidency over the European Union (EU) Council will allow reaching a new quality of EU-Belarusian cooperation, Foreign Vice-Minister Andrius Krivas says.

Krivas gave his position after the annual seminar of the Nordic Council and the Baltic Assembly on parliamentary dialogue among Belarus, the Nordic Council and the Baltic Assembly on Monday.

"The vice-minister expressed hope that, during the Lithuanian EU Council presidency, Belarus will use the opportunity to participate in the Eastern Partnership initiative, and the results of the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius this fall will facilitate a new-quality phase of EU-Belarusian relations," the Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

According to the statement, Krivas emphasized the need for Belarus to release and rehabilitate political prisoners.

Lithuania is holding presidency of the EU Council in the second half of this year and will host the Eastern Partnership program, which involves Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine.
