122 foreigners sent from Lithuania last year

The number of foreign citizens sent from Lithuania rose dramatically last year. 122 foreigners were sent from the country in 2012, compared to 62 a year ago, according to the State Border Guard Service.

The SBGS's Foreigners Registration Center in the town of Pabradė, where illegal migrants and asylum seekers are temporarily held, carries out the extradition procedure.

In 2012, Lithuanian officials received 309 asylum applications, compared to 299 in 2011. Asylum seekers are taken to the Foreigners Registration Center and their applications are processed by the Migration Department.

The number of persons banned from entering Lithuania stood at 2,215 last year, unchanged from 2011. Foreign citizens without visas are most often barred from entering Lithuania.
