The chief executive officer of Lithuania's financially-troubled basketball club Zalgiris Kaunas on Tuesday denied a media report about a possible financial support from Russia's gas giant Gazprom, saying that the club has not had any contracts with the Russian group.

„I'm hearing about this for the first time. As far as we know, this is inaccurate information. Perhaps it would be very good news if a company like this considered supporting the team. But from our side, there hasn't been any contact with this company. Nobody has contacted us to ask for any information. I don't think this information is true,“ Paulius Motiejunas told the public broadcaster LRT Radio.

„On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised if Zalgiris' situation were being discussed, because VTB (United) League understands the situation and knows what is going on,“ he said.

The Lrytas.lt online news portal has reported, citing unnamed sources, that Gazprom's officials in Moscow on Tuesday are considering providing financial support to Zalgiris Kaunas. If Gazprom's answer is „yes“, then Arvydas Sabonis, the president of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation, should inform the club about this on Tuesday.

Neither Sabonis nor Gazprom's representatives could be reached for comment by BNS.

The situation at Zalgiris became critical following the closure of Ukio Bankas, a local bank controlled by the club's indirect owner, Vladimir Romanov.
