"A decision was made to call an emergency in the district," Ranceliauskas told BNS on Thursday.

"The situation is that water levels in rivers are rising, the road Šilutė-Rusnė is currently under more than 40cm of water," he added.

In Ranceliauskas' words, 15 villages with eight farmsteads and 11 residents have been flooded in the district. The residents have not applied for assistance yet.

On Thursday, the neighboring Pagėgiai municipality also considered calling an emergency but put off the decision for now. The municipality's officials said an emergency might be called on Monday, should the situation deteriorate.

Unexpected rise in temperatures and accumulation of floes caused flooding in the lower Nemunas in the last days of 2012.
