Asked to comment on Lithuania's attempts to bar LGBT pride parade in central Vilnius, as well as legislative initiatives to outlaw abortions, sex change operations and boycott European documents on domestic violence, Barroso said the EC will not hesitate to respond to any issues within EU's competences that may emerge in connection to discrimination of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender populations.

In his words, the EC has already turned to the Lithuanian government back in 2010 to express concern about various setbacks and disruptions related to the LGBT pride parade held that year.

In the interview, Barroso is also asked about the chances of Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė to take a leading EU position, if she decided to pursue the objective. He said he cannot evaluate potential candidates for, for example, the president of the European Commission.
