"Lithuania has been a member of the European Union for eight years. Being in the organization with other European countries, we have an opportunity to create our future in a responsible manner, improve economic well-being and security. I extend my sincere congratulations to all people of Lithuania," she said in a press release.

Foreign Minister Audronius Ažubalis said in his congratulatory message that Lithuania's contribution to EU history included concentration and patience during the economic recession.

In his words, Lithuania's eight years of EU membership involved ups and downs, but the country did not only survive but showed an example of concentration and patience, while the society held on to its principles and loyalty to values of freedom and solidarity.

"This is our contribution to the EU history we should be proud of," reads the communiqué issued by the Foreign Ministry.

Lithuania, along with Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia, joined the EU on 1 May 2004 in the largest wave of the organization's expansion so far.
