An ad hoc investigation commission of the Lithuanian Seimas suggests stripping MP Egidijus Vareikis of the opposition Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats of his legal immunity. Vareikis is suspected of domestic violence against his wife.

On Tuesday, the panel adopted a draft resolution in the issue after seven commissions members voted in favor and one abstained.

At least 71 lawmakers need to vote in favor of the resolution for Vareikis to lose legal immynity.

Ieva Kvedaraitė, a prosecutor of Vilnius District Prosecutor's Office, told the panel that prosecutors have enough evidence to prove that Vareikis slapped his wife twice in the face and kicked her once while under the influence of alcohol.

"I accept that, I am sorry, it was an act of great stupidity on my part, there's no point in defending myself," Vareikis said.

Pursuant to the Statute of the Seimas, an MP cannot be prosecuted, arrested, or have his/her freedom otherwise restricted without a sanction from the Seimas.
