Lithuanian prosecutors find no violations at Palace of Grand Dukes

Prosecutors have not found any violations related to the construction of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in central Vilnius, contrary to conclusions of the National Audit Office, the Prosecutor General's Office said on Monday.

Prosecutors say they have not identified any facts on the embezzlement of funds allocated to the construction of the palace.

Claims that construction costs increased from 114.670 million litas (EUR 32.74 million) to 367.669 million litas are not accurate, prosecutors say. In their words, there was no agreement on construction costs before the construction contract was signed as it stipulated only a formula for the calculation of costs.

Experts concluded that 213,116 million litas have been spent on the construction, and the considerably higher amount mentioned by the National Audit Office is a estimate for the whole construction.

„All funds have been used legitimately and their use is properly documented,“ prosecutors say.

The Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania is being constructed on the remains of a castle destroyed 200 years ago.

The first stage of the construction should be finished by July 1.
