More attempts to bribe police reported in Lithuania

Lithuania's police is reporting growing numbers of attempts to bribe police officers, a tendency the Police Department views as the police force's strengthening immunity against corruption.

Some 448 attempts to bribe police officers were reported in police offices across the country in the first half of this year, as compared with 316 cases year-on-year.

In 270 instances of 448, the bribery attempts were made by drunk individuals and 88 percent of the cases were unlawful attempts to “settle” violations of traffic rules.

According to the registered cases, men are responsible for the bulk of the bribery attempts, while female offenders account for merely 5 percent of all bribery attempts, although they commit about a fourth of all violations.

The total sum proposed in bribes in the first half of this year stood at nearly 226,000 litas (EUR 65,500), as compared with nearly 73,000 litas year-on-year.
