Šakiai district mayor detained under suspicions of corruption

Officers of the Kaunas branch of the Special Investigation Service (SIS) detained Šakiai district Mayor Juozas Bertašius of the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union suspected of misuse of power.

Bertašius was taken in on Monday, along with another Šakiai District Municipality official, Kęstutis Kuncaitis.

The SIS is investigating a case whereby the two officials are suspected of embezzling funds intended for the upkeep and maintenance of local roads.
