Vilnius and Klaipėda to start school year on Monday while many other cities on Saturday

Vilnius and Klaipėda have moved the official opening the new academic year to Monday, 3 September, while municipalities most other major cities have decided to open the new school year on Saturday, 1 September, the Education and Science Ministry said.

According to data available to the ministry, schools in Šiauliai, Panevėžys, Alytus, and Marijampolė will hold the festive event to start the new academic year 2012-2013 on 1 September.

Kaunas schools will open the academic year on different dates, the Kaunas municipality told BNS.

Preliminary data suggests that 26 municipalities (46 pct) have advised schools to start the academic year on 1 September and 24 municipalities (40 pct) will start it on 3 September.

Teachers working on Saturday will have to receive extra compensation for work on a day-off.
