In Lithuania, there have long not been such public discussions on foreign policy as were incited by President Gitanas Nausėda and Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius’ proposals in recent weeks to renew dialogue with Belarus. The Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats’ (TS-LKD) categorical reaction to L. Linkevičius’ meeting with the Belarussian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei, describing the meeting as basically a betrayal of Lithuania’s interests, has sparked significant debate. It is not that often that the foreign minister is called to Seimas to explain himself over betrayal of national interests.

In his comment, Marius Laurinavičius correctly summarises that these are not improvisations by L. Linkevičius, but a potential shift in relations with Belarus initiated by President G. Nausėda. However, according to M. Laurinavičius, this is “G. Nausėda’s first foreign policy mistake”. Not so much a mistake of the president’s position toward Belarus, but more so that this shift was launched without achieving clear consensus within Lithuania and without explaining the motives of dialogue with Belarus.
