Vytautas Plečkaitis. From a Communist Party school to big politics. The president’s legacy

With her two terms in office, which lasted a total of ten years, now over, Dalia Grybauskaitė has concluded the end of an era in our country’s political history. She is the last president, who was born and grew up in Soviet Lithuania, who made a successful career for herself in the communist system and for over 10 years was a member of the Communist Party of the USSR. That’s not a rebuke, simply a fact.

All of the presidents in our country’s 30 years of independence, starting with Algirdas Brazauskas and ending with Dalia Grybauskaitė, were in the Soviet times members of the Communist Party. The exception is Valdas Adamkus who fled to the West at the end of the war and returned to an independent Lithuania.
