Ambassador Darius Pranckevicius who attended the Brussels meeting of the Political Security Committee said after a four-hour closed discussion that the member-states submitted their opinions and positions.

„An agreement was reached to hold an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers without delay, on Wednesday,“ Pranckevicius said in a telephone interview to BNS.

„All options remain open. Proposals will be made to ministers, and they will have to make decisions. All scenarios are subject to discussions. The conclusions made today are procedural, political decisions are up to ministers,“ said the diplomat.

The role of Lithuania, as the EU Council presidency in the second half of this year, is less significant, as EU meetings on foreign policy matters are coordinated by the EU Foreign Affairs Council headed by High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.

Earlier on Monday, Lithuania's Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius said EU would probably revise the economic aid to Egypt in response to what he said were “inadequate” treatment of protesters.

Over the past few days, violence in Egypt claimed about 800 lives.
