Former Parliament Speaker Irena Degutienė nominated as candidate for Lithuanian conservative leadership

Branches of the opposition Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats (conservatives) have started nomination of candidates for chairmanship of the party. The Trakai branch was the first to nominate its candidate, proposing former parliamentary speaker Irena Degutienė for the post.

At its general meeting on Sunday, Trakai branch proposed a total of four candidates.

"In the end, we decided to nominate one, more candidates would seem less reliable," Gediminas Romaška, chairman of the branch, told BNS.

In his words, Degutienė secured a solid majority of votes. Other proposed candidates included the conservatives' incumbent leader, former prime minister Andrius Kubilius, and MPs Kęstutis Masiulis and Rasa Juknevičienė.

The Homeland Union–Christian Democrats must have a new leader in place before its congress in late April of early May.

Kubilius has said he would not refuse to run for one more term as the party's leader.
