The Seimas Constitutional Commission is considering a 10-year ban as one of the options, the Lietuvos Žinios daily writes.

Commission Chairwoman Rimantė Šalaševičiūtė says two conclusions have been drafted and voting on them is scheduled for May 15.

"We are leaving the 10-year ban. That's international practice," she said.

A previous bill, which later received parliamentary backing, provided for a 4-year ban, but, Šalaševičiūtė said, the new conclusions took into account the opinion of legal experts who recommended introducing a 12-year ban for running for parliament.

Constitutional amendments on banning individuals removed from office by impeachment to run for parliament for four years were initiated by 42 members of the previous Seimas to implement a ruling of the European Court of Human Rights.
