Lithuanian Parliamentary Speaker dismisses decision of sacking Economy Minister as hasty

Lithuania's Parliamentary Speaker Vydas Gedvilas says that the ruling Social Democratic Party jumped to conclusion to condemn former economy minister Birutė Vėsaitė who flew to Kazakhstan on an airplane chartered by businessmen.

"I believe it was probably a hasty decision. Other parties and groups were charged with being behind Vėsaitė's resignation. I want to deny this information, as public statements by certain politicians do not necessarily reflect the political group's opinion or the party's opinion," Gedvilas said in an interview to Žinių Radijas news radio on Wednesday morning.

In his words, the Labor Party's presidium had no time to approve a position on the matter, "as the Social Democrats gave a stance in support of removing Birutė Vėsaitė."

On May 23, the Labor Party's former leader Viktor Uspaskich suggested that Vėsaitė step down voluntarily. The party's leader Vytautas Gapšys then said that the situation surrounding Vėsaitė was a disgrace to the ruling coalition.
