Lithuanian President: Gazprom makes requirements that cannot be met

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė said on Thursday that Russia's gas company Gazprom has sent the government a list of requirements that cannot be met and that no negotiations are taking place due to a lack of willingness on the part of Russia.

"The material that has been received from Gazprom is a list of requirements to the Lithuanian government, requirements that cannot be met and are even outside the government's competence. Therefore, I am calling on the government, in this situation, to accelerate the construction of the LNG terminal (in Klaipėda) and to try to reduce dependence on Gazprom as swiftly as possible. This is my assessment," she told reporters in Vilnius.

Grybauskaitė confirmed that she is familiar with the documents sent by Gazprom, but added that she cannot disclose details because the documents are confidential.

"In my opinion, negotiations are not taking place. In order for negotiations to take place, there must be willingness from both sides to negotiate," she said.
