Lithuanian President meets with candidate for minister of justice Juozas Bernatonis

The Social Democratic candidate for Lithuania's minister of justice, Juozas Bernatonis, met with President Dalia Grybauskaitė on Thursday. After the meeting, he said a lack of public trust was the biggest problem of the country's justice system.

Bernatonis also praised the work of his predecessor Liberal Remigijus Šimašius and promised to continue it.

Prime Minister-Designate Algirdas Butkevičius had said the Social Democrats had two candidates for the minister of justice, Bernatonis and Julius Sabatauskas. The latter, sources say, may be appointed chairman of the Seimas Committee on Legal Affairs.

Asked to comment on the fact that the Labour Party, currently on trial for fraudulent bookkeeping, is taking part in the formation of a new Cabinet, Bernaotinis said it was the will of the people.

"This is, of course, difficult government formation but they have voters' trust. It’s a decisive factor in this case since, as you know, the Seimas is elected by the nation," Bernatonis said.
