Zenonas Vaigauskas, chairman of Lithuania's Central Electoral Commission, says that if they decide to become members of the Seimas, they will have to turn to the election panel no later than on Wednesday. Otherwise, the panel's decision will not be published in the Official Gazette on time and it will not come into force.
"Frankly speaking, they should make up their minds now. This is why we are holding a meeting tomorrow as otherwise the Central Electoral Commission will not be able to adopt a decision that we would be able to announce for it to come into force," Vaigauskas told reporters on Tuesday.
"So those who want to leave the European Parliament … should contact us tomorrow, and better today for us to make necessary decisions," he added.
At a Tuesday meeting, the Central Electoral Commission satisfied requests by over 20 members of local councils to cancel their mandates for them to be able to work in the Seimas.
