Basketball star Šarūnas Jasikevičius signs contract with Žalgiris Kaunas

Lithuanian basketball star Šarūnas Jasikevičius will join Žalgiris Kaunas, champion team of the Lithuanian Basketball League, next season.

At a news conference at the Žalgiris Arena in Kaunas on Friday, Jasikevičius signed a one-year contract with the strongest Lithuanian club.

Jasikevičius, 39, won silver in the Spanish Championship with Barcelona last season, scoring an average of 4.9 points and 2 assists during his 14 minutes on the court during ULEB Euroleague.

After studies at Maryland University (US), Jasikevičius started his professional career in Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius, playing for Union Olimpija Ljubljana (Slovenia), Barcelona (Spain), Maccabi Tel Aviv (Israel), Indiana Pacers and Golden State Warriors (both in the US), Panathinaikos Athens (Greece) and Fenerbahche Ulker Istanbul (Turkey).

In addition to a number of personal awards, gold in Israeli, Spanish, Greek and Turkish championships and four Euroleague triumphs, Jasikevičius was recognized as Europe's MVP in 3003, 2004 and 2005. He was picked Lithuania's best athlete in 2003.

In 2003, he won the European Basketball Championships with the Lithuanian national team, winning bronze in the Olympics in 2000 and in the European Championships in 2007.
