Brewers are getting “greener“: reusable cups in the Brewers day festival

July 3 is the International Day without Plastic Bags to highlight the damage that plastic waste does to the environment. It is important to emphasize that not only bags but also disposable tableware, which takes many years to decompose, poses a serious threat to nature.

Modern companies agree that reducing the use of plastic is an important task for business as well. Therefore, the Brewers Day festival in Klaipėda will have multiple use plastic cups that do not pollute nature.

Cups to be used in “Švyturys Brewery“ Brewers day festival on July 13 are made of special plastic. The brewery will be able to reuse them many times in the future.

“When buying a drink in the event, visitors will leave a deposit which they will get back when leaving. With every new drink, the guests leave the old cup and get a new one. Used cups are taken to a designated tent from which our partners collect them for washing. These cups are safely stored and later used during other events,” says Evelina Juškaitė, commercial marketing specialist at “Švyturys-Utenos alus“ said to a press release.

More opportunities to be “greener“every year

It is not the first year when the Brewers day celebration in Klaipėda has multiple use cups. According to Evelina Juškaitė, this year the company‘s new partners will allow taking care of environmental protection even more.

“Recently, several companies appeared in Lithuania that take care of the collection, leaching, and delivery of reusable cups. This year we have found partners who will ensure efficient services, and for this reason, we will be able to go further and bring these reusable cups not only to the Brewers day”, - says Evelina Juškaitė.

According to E. Juškaitė, with this step, the company aims to raise public awareness of environmental issues and encourage other businesses to take care of the environment.

“We think about how to improve and contribute more to nature conservation. At the same time, we also want to encourage people to take environmental protection more seriously. We hope other businesses and festival organizers will try to protect nature more as well. But interest in environmental protection is growing rapidly in Lithuania, more and more consumers are trying to be responsible, more companies are looking for green and sustainable ways of doing business. We are pleased to be working with event organizers who also contribute and help discover nature-friendly solutions,” says E. Juškaitė.

Ingredients used in brewing can be recycled as well

A well-known brewer and beer sommelier Jonas Lingys claims that environmental protection and ecology are closely related to his profession as well. According to him, resource saving and responsible consumption are particularly important.

“In terms of environmental protection, saving resources is essential. Reusable cups significantly reduce environmental pollution and create sustainability - the more people use such cups, the more beautiful environment we will have. Environmental protection and resource saving are directly related to brewing.

Everything that is used to make beer: malt, water, hops, yeast, are used in a way to minimize pollution. Some products are used more times, for example, used malt is taken to farmers who use it again as feed for livestock, and used yeast is processed by other companies into protein supplements or is further used in the cosmetics industry,” says Jonas Lingys.
