Elderly people make up 18 percent of Lithuanian population

At the beginning of this year, elderly people of over 65 years of age made up 18.2 percent of the Lithuanian population. There were 394 centenarians living in the country, Statistics Lithuania says.

According to the statistics department, there were 542,200 people 65 and older living in Lithuania at the beginning of this year. A decade ago, the number was 512,200, or 14.9 percent of the total population.

October 1 marks the International Day of Older Persons.
