As Mindaugas Lašas of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BNS on Tuesday, two long-term observers have already left for Russia, and another three diplomats will leave on Wednesday. They are members of a mission of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.

MP Vareikis told BNS he also planned to observer the elections.

Analysts have no doubts that the incumbent Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will be elected president but there are doubts as to whether he'll win the office in the first round.

Following the extension of the presidential term in Russia to six years, Putin would theoretically be in power until 2024.
