"Lithuania has received an official letter from France inviting it to join the EU's planned training mission in Mali. Lithuania's potential support for the training mission is currently under consideration. The final decision will be made only after financial means are evaluated. The EU mission's key task is to train Mali's military forces," the ministry said in a statement.
Lithuania can join the mission by sending not only military inspectors but also weaponry or military equipment for Mali's armed forces, the ministry said, adding that EU personnel have no plans to take part in military action.
Since last Friday, French forces have been backed actions of Mali's government against Islamist fighters who have been in control of a large region in the country's north since last April.
"The Ministry of National Defense has not received a request to join France's military action against rebels in Mali and is not considering it," the ministry said.
Islamists carried out a coup in northern Mali in March.
The EU plans to train Mali's forces, and France has been supporting Mali's government with military action against the Islamists after Paris received backing from the United Nations.
