Great Vilna Synagogue archaeological research surprised with unexpected findings

July 18, 2019, at 11 o‘clock in Great Vilna Synagogue complex a unique place will be uncovered, which are not marked in any historical materials, nor maps or drawings. This object is a cellar under the Bimah, which, highly possible, collapsed during World War II, when Synagogue was still used, Good Will Foundation announced in a press release.

The late collapse of this object allowed to preserve gilded memorial plaques with the inscriptions in Hebrew. Among the ruins, the Jekaterina’s the II silver coins from 18th century were also found. To put it in archaeologist’s Justinas Račas words “this is a worldwide unique discovery, as no cellars were found under the Bimah in synagogues across Lithuania”.

Lithuanian Jewish (Litvak) Community and Good Will Foundation Board Chairwoman Faina Kukliansky, Director of Israel Antiquities Authority dr. Jon Seligman and Archeologist from “Kultūros paveldo išsaugojimo pajėgos” Justinas Račas will uncover historical findings to all interested official persons and media representatives on July 18, 2018 at 11 o’clock in Vokiečių str. 13A.

Great Vilna Synagogue archaeological research is financed by the funds of the Good Will Foundation. Project partners – Lithuanian Jewish (Litvak) Community, Israel Antiquities Authority and Vilnius city municipality.
